Tau Beta Pi
I went to the Tau Beta Pi info meeting today. Interesting, but yet another instance of nothing ever coming easy. I'm facing somewhat of an uphill battle trying to get in as a sophmore, usually applicants are juniors and seniors, but I really want to get in now while my GPA is still high enough to qualify. Once I'm in its a lifetime membership, so I'm going to try and get while the getting's good.
The reason I was selected now is because I have enough units to have junior standing (thanks AP!). Apparently one of the requirements for joining is to be enrolled in or have taken an upper-division course. I talked to the leaders and they said that joining as a sophomore isn't as common but can happen. Since initiation doesn't happen until next quarter, I can still join if I take an upper-division next quarter. I'll head over to counseling tomorrow and see what I can do. Among other things, I need to accumulate 15 points before initiation. These points represent hours spent at TBP activities, which seem to be pretty numerous. There's community outreach to local schools, some Mexico trips (housebuilding, etc), beach cleanups and other things. Intramural sports and social events are also going on. One of the coolest things though was the robotics project. Last year's project was an underwater diver that had to navigate a pool and pick up objects on the bottom. The project leader said they were pretty successful last year, placing 15th of about 50. And they beat MIT, he made sure that was clear. Anyway, TBP looks like a great group to be a part of, and I'll try my best to make it happen. Updates to follow.
